27 May 2010 No. 7
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Tena koutou katoa
Well it has certainly been a wet start to the week. Not even the weather deterred some reckless vandalism over the weekend. It’s unfortunate that as much as we try to beautify our environment through our Environmental Education Programme, this is spoilt by a selfish few in our community.
However we are committed to maintaining the value we have for our school environment and not let the actions of a few spoil the quality of our school or our programmes.
We are currently looking at how we can increase our security. This does take time and money. You as a community can help by being aware of people abusing our school, particularly on weekends and reporting any concerning behaviour to the police.

“Thanks to the people who put their names forward for the positions available, and thank you to those who voted. The other members of the BOT are Piripi Moore and Bridget Westenra.
We had a good meeting earlier this month, and had some discussion about the school’s uniform policy. Two parents and one grandparent attended the meeting and made submissions, which was helpful. We will be having further discussions about the policy at our next two meetings, with a view to finalising any amendments to it. We are also looking at other sources for supply of our uniform. When you come to a parent teacher interview on June 16th or 17th , we will have a couple of questions prepared for you. We would appreciate your feedback.
Security of the school property is also on the agenda, and we are making enquiries about installing security cameras.
We hope that 2010 is proving to be a great year for you and your children at Onerahi School.

Parent Interviews
These will be held on Wednesday 16th June from 2.15 until 8pm and Thursday 17th June from 2.15 until 5.30pm.
An appointments notice will be coming out next week. Please get these back as soon as possible, so we can confirm interview times. Please remember to register at the library before attending your interview.
Exemplary Practice
Last week we had a visit from a group of teachers from Totara Grove School. They were observing classes in action using Inquiry Learning. The feedback was very positive regarding the skill and knowledge of our teachers and students. This is a credit to our school.
Class Photos
These were taken last week at school. The photos which were ordered before photo day have arrived back at school and look great. Those photos which were ordered after the photo day will be here soon. Tomorrow, Friday 28th May is the last day to drop photo orders at school, after this you can communicate directly with Liz Davies. Her phone number is 4352384
Attendance
Thank you to those parents/caregivers who are taking advantage of our systems to notify us regarding absences.
Unfortunately there are still a large number who are not contacting the school. It is most important that we are made aware of any absent children and the reasons for their absence.
Following up large volumes of absent students puts a strain on our resources. Please help us overcome this issue by contacting the school by 9.00am daily if your child is absent. Phone 4360521 or text 0211343465
Found Property
There is a collection of valuable items in our “Found Property” area. This is available for viewing in the front entrance to block 1. Any clothing left at the end of the term will be put in the clothing bin. Clearly named clothing increases the chance that your childs clothing will be returned.
Welcome to our Student Teachers
We welcome our student teachers who are working in classes across the school for the next five weeks.
Headlice
As many of you know this little
problem seems to have reared its ugly head. We know that many of you are being vigilant and are treating your children when you discover that they have headlice. We ask that everyone keeps checking and treating their
children every week.
Some ways of preventing headlice
- Don’t share brushes, combs, hats and other items that come into contact with hair.
- Tie long hair back or plait it.
- Brush hair regularly.
- Check the hair of everyone in the family at least once a week.
- Take action if a child is scratching unusually—check their hair carefully.
Best Treatment for Resistant Lice
We have used a remedy that works 100% of the time, a 50/50 solution of oil and white vinegar (mineral oil should be used—Paraffin Oil is
recommended—it smells less than other oils and can be bought from the chemist). It should be massaged into the hair, covered for 1 hour with cling film, a shower cap or swimming cap, then shampooed out with regular shampoo. It can be repeated as often as necessary. The vinegar should
detach the nits from the hair shaft while the oil suffocates any live lice and makes it easy and smooth to comb out the detached nits and dead lice. It is a natural and safe procedure.
Hint: A tablespoon of baking soda, dissolved in a cup of warm water, can be rubbed into the hair before
shampooing to help remove excess oil.
This is the solution that the PTA make up and is available at school for no charge. Please ask at the office.
There is also a new product on the market called Nit-Enz, it is available at Onerahi New World. This product is organic and New Zealand made. There is a website which you may like to visit, www.nit-enz.com
Further information is available from school. Feel free to pop in and pick up an information pack.
A.F.L Kiwi Kick
Its great to see the parent involvement and large group of children who are able to take advantage of this
programme. The first session was last Wednesday and by all accounts looks like a lot of fun.
Sausage Sizzle
Tomorrow, Friday 28th May, the Environmental Education group are having a sausage sizzle at school. The money raised will be used to develop the area behind the new classrooms into an environmental focus area.
Sausages cost $1.50 and must be pre ordered. They can be ordered on Friday morning.

Life Education
A couple of weeks ago our class experienced Life
Education with Nadine, Harold and Tam. We caught
up with Alex and his brainy bunch. We learnt heaps and
had fun. If you ever get the chance, you should go to the
mobile class room. It is so much fun!
